Homeless youth in Hope Street's Gold Stars Music Program are sharing their stories through song.
The Gold Stars Music Program is a Hope Street initiative funded under Merri-bek City Council's Community Grants Program* whereby young people experiencing homelessness have been supported to use music to tell their stories in their own words. The results are varied and exciting.
Professional artists including Monica Weightman, Meriki Hood, FLYBZ, Dayelle Fitzgerald and the Houndlings have performed at the refuge and supported young people with writing and performing. Gold Key studios brought recording equipment to the refuge and to young people who had recently moved out and wanted to continue working on their songs.
Through this program, young people 16-25 years of age have been able to use music-based media to provide a heightened understanding of the plight of homeless youth in the City of Merri-bek.
Live Performances
With the leadership and guidance of well-known artists Monica Weightman and Kate Clarke we have seen Cathy and Mia (performers in Hope Street's Gold Stars) as well as other young people blossom into amazing artists in their own right.
On 20 March 2015, Mia and Kathy gave fantastic performances at the annual RDNS Where the Heart is...Community Festival held at Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy’s North.

*The Community Grants Program provides financial support and incentive to community groups, organisations and individuals to implement and support community building initiatives. The grants program is targeted at not-for-profit incorporated community groups. With the determination and hard work of Kate Clarke, Hope Street's application for a Community Grant was successful.
